The water lapped at the lake's sandy shore as a cool wind carried both scent and the lone cry of a distant Monsloon towards Victor. The ten yr-old male had his hometown to his back, as he sat in the dune grass, studying the contents of his pack; six pokeballs and his very own, glossy black and navy blue Pokedex. Nearby, his starter Pokemon, a Sandiel; was running into the water, only to run back to land when a wave rolled in, as if it thought the water was chasing him. Holding the ball in his hands, Victor pushed the button on it's core and was mildly taken back as it grew in size from it's reduced form. It was only when the grass rustled behind him, that he snapped out of his thoughts, and gripping the ball in shaking hands, he glanced towards the sound and was taken back when he saw the professor's assistant. It was strange to not see her next to Professor Aspen, or more like hanging behind him as if she was his shadow. He was about to say something, his lips parted and he lifted a finger when he cringed, an object had just dropped into his lap, something sopping wet and slimy. His eyes darted to the source of disgust, and found that Sandiel had dropped a drenched fragment of driftwood onto his shorts. He eyed his water pup Pokemon, who met his raised eyebrow with big, expressive eyes and gave a "Yip!", before spinning a complete circle and started to pant. He heard the hushed giggle now beside him, and he glanced as she passed him on his left, settling down at the dog's level. Without a word, she reached over, her fingers brushing his skin as she took the wood and tossed it down the lake's shore several feet away, and there went Sandiel. Victor's face flushed, and he stole glances at Lara, even though her face was turned to the opposite direction, the same with the Pokemon that was perched on her shoulders. The bag slung on his shoulder, he stood and straightened his cap and cleared his throat.
"So what brings you down here?"
The moment it left his mouth, he realized it sounded dumb, Pokemon are abundant outside of human settlement. It was wasn't because he was here, was it?
Her lips pursed, she turned to face him and was quiet for the longest time. Her Pokemon, a fire-type and one that he recognized was available for a starter Pokemon, let out a cry, and shuffled slowly down her shirt to the ground. "I dunno, with the low pressure in the air, signaling rain, I figured water types would be flocking into this area. Well, that and I asked your mother if you were around."
Sandiel was back, and he stood by Victor's legs, driftwood in mouth. "Huh." was all he said, running his hand through his bangs. Lara smiled quickly and hurriedly carried on, "Haha, that came out wrong. It's just that.. most trainers leave this tiny town immediately once they got what they want; their very own starter Pokemon, Pokeballs and Dex. And you..., it's been four days since you got your's, am I correct? " Before standing, she reached down and picked up her companion, who was obsessively shaking sand off each paw, without success.
Victor looked past her, grasping his pack by his side with one hand, the other slack as he contemplated why he was here.
"... I guess, because I don't know if I'm ready. This doesn't mean I don't want to be a trainer, I've practically dreamt this my whole life. I was the most excited and hard-working student in Pokémon academy for my young age... which got on the nerves of my peers. So what I'm saying is.. I don't know if I will be able to work to the best of my abilities and, that I that I might dissappoint my Pokemon in battle." The shore was silent, even the distant sounds of nature ceased, and both Pokemon present watched on with quiet awe.
"Is that what is holding you back?" Lara said softly, standing at last. She bit her lower lip, looking down at her bear cub Pokemon's head. Her eyes flashed, and she grinned from ear to ear. "Okai-doki then. I will accompany you and teach you to catch your very own wild Pokemon." Victor perked up, sling his pack behind him, his eyes burning with blazing excitement.
"If you don't mind waiting a couple hours."
He nearly fell over, after being caught off guard and having his excitement snuffed out.
"Well, what else did you expect?" she asked exasperated. "I am a Pokemon Professor's assistant, I have many duties I can't just shirk unless I can get permission otherwise. And besides, I am expecting a very important person to be visiting my home to marvel at my paintings." She squeezed her Pokemon close and it wasn't until it bawled that she apologized to it and loosed her hold. "I still can't believe he answered my letter, AND it was a positive response! To think, someone famous and amazing such as Mr Thackeray Eden is coming to a sleepy place like Historia Town!"
Victor had picked himself up and tried to save face as she rambled on, but at the last part, couldn't help look to her with a quizzical look. "Who is Thackeray Eden?"
Now it was Lara's turn to be taken back. "Huh? You don't know who Mr Eden is? He's only the most famous Pokemon stylists in our region." After letting her words sink in, he scoffed, which then became a laugh. "Oh, okay. But I usually memorize things to do with my upcoming journey, like what towns and cities have gyms, and the names of the Elite Four." He carried his arms folded, hands on the back of his head, as he watched her with a smirk. "I'll keep in mind to be more courteous of your interests while in your presence." Her spirit seemed to brighten again, but her lids lowered as she uttered the last comeback of the morning. "Well, keep in mind, that I too am into Pokemon and that styling has nothing to do with my profession." She hefted her Pokemon back onto her shoulder. "Now how about we head back to the Lab."
Lara's Pokemon had just reminded him of something he had considered, and now was determined to ask. "Yeah, but before we go, do you mind if..." Victor trailed off, fumbling for his Dex in his pack. When he held it in his hands and held it up, she understood and chuckled. "Why not?" she answered simply, patting her cub on the head while he pushed into her palm. The Dex popped open when it read a Pokemon was directly before it.
| Embursa, the little bear Pokemon. This small Pokemon is friendly and cuddly, but tends to climb things to feel bigger and safer. The flames it can produce are tiny, but it can create many at one time. |
He smiled. Now he had two entries for his Dex. With a nod, they set off back into Historia Town.
