The forest was terribly silent, even at this late an hour. No wind rustled the leaves, nothing scampered through the decaying leafy carpet on the forest floor. Even the moon seemed dimmer than it should be. The leafless trees seemed to lean in menacingly, their bare branches like gnarled fingers. The squat, bare bushes tugged at her dress like so many sharp little fingers. A twig snapped and her breath caught in her throat, but it was just her boot. She was going mad. Her starved ears groped for any small sound they could find. In this profound absence of stimulus, her brain seemed to create it's own sounds to fill in the vacancy. None of them helped her paranoia.
From behind a thick ash tree, a few yards away, golden eyes shone through the pressing darkness.
"Such a pretty face" it purred, "shame to have to remove it. But she trespasses on our home, rules must be upheld"
Turning its head and tilting it slightly, it responded in a squeakier voice. "She's really pretty, do we have to do it now? She doesn't seem like she's looking for you. Besides, she'll die a much worse death if she keeps going; Lots of blood, plenty of screaming, that'll be much more fun to watch." it grimaced ever so slightly at this last remark, But that quickly changed into a murderous smile.
It's pupil's dialated, reducing the golden glow to a ring. "You have a point" It smiled, it's voice deceptively velvet, "no sense jumping to conclusions. We wait and watch."
"I'll get the popcorn!" it squeaked.
